Wisdom for Evangelism in a Digital Age | Rev Dr John Kwasi Fosu

Amazing Grace Baptist ChurcH, Hamburg Bible Study Material on Matthew 5:14-16

Introduction

The world has undergone a significant technological transformation over the past few decades. Today, communication occurs not only through face-to-face interactions but also via digital platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and various online communities. Millions of people spend several hours each day engaging with content, exchanging ideas, and building relationships in these digital spaces. As Christians, we must ask how we can effectively fulfil the Great Commission in this rapidly changing environment. The call to evangelism remains unchanged, but the methods for sharing the Gospel have expanded dramatically. The digital age presents both opportunities and challenges for believers seeking to reach others for Christ.

This study seeks to help believers understand the biblical basis for digital evangelism, recognise social media and technology as valuable tools for Gospel outreach, and identify wise ways of representing Christ online.

Contextual Background

Jesus’ command in Matthew 5:14-16 was given during the Sermon on the Mount. In this teaching, Jesus described the identity and mission of His followers in the world. He declared that believers are “the light of the world.” Light exists to illuminate darkness, reveal truth, provide guidance, and bring hope. Just as a city situated on a hill cannot be hidden, Christians are called to live visibly and influence society through their godly conduct and witness.

In the first century, believers used the communication tools available to them. Jesus preached in villages, synagogues, homes, and open fields. The Apostle Paul utilised Roman roads, public marketplaces, synagogues, and handwritten letters to spread the Gospel across vast regions. Throughout church history, Christians have embraced new means of communication, including the printing press, radio, television, and now digital technology. The digital world can therefore be viewed as one of the largest mission fields in human history. It offers believers the opportunity to share biblical truth beyond geographical boundaries and reach people who may never enter a church building.

Christians Are Called to Be Visible Lights

Jesus’ declaration that believers are the light of the world carries significant implications for the digital age. Light is not meant to be hidden. It is intended to shine and influence its surroundings. Likewise, Christians should not separate their faith from their online presence.

Many people today encounter Christians first through social media profiles, comments, messages, and shared content before they ever meet them personally. Therefore, every believer should view their digital presence as an extension of their Christian witness. Our words, attitudes, and interactions online should reflect the character of Christ. Whether we are posting updates, commenting on discussions, sharing content, or communicating privately, we should demonstrate love, integrity, humility, and grace. When our online conduct reflects the teachings of Christ, we allow our light to shine before others.

Technology Can Be a Tool for the Gospel

The mission of the Church has never changed. Jesus commissioned His followers to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). What has changed over time are the methods available for carrying out that mission. Technology itself is morally neutral. Like any tool, it can be used either for good or for evil. Christians should therefore view technology as a gift that can be employed for Kingdom purposes.

Today, believers can share Bible verses, devotional messages, testimonies, sermons, podcasts, videos, and livestreamed services with people around the world. Prayer meetings can be held online. Bible studies can be hosted on video conferencing platforms. Churches can maintain contact with members and reach new audiences through digital channels. What once required extensive travel can now be achieved with a smartphone and an internet connection. This presents an extraordinary opportunity for evangelism and discipleship.

Your Online Life is Part of Your Witness

Paul instructed Timothy to be an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity (1 Timothy 4:12). This principle applies equally to digital communication.

In today’s society, many individuals form opinions about Christianity based on the behaviour of Christians they encounter online. A believer’s social media presence can either attract people toward Christ or push them away.

When Christians consistently display kindness, integrity, encouragement, and respect, they provide a credible witness for the Gospel. On the other hand, when believers engage in hostile arguments, spread false information, or exhibit ungodly behaviour online, their testimony is weakened. Every post, comment, and interaction contributes to the witness we present to the world. Therefore, Christians should strive to ensure that their digital lives align with their profession of faith.

Every Believer Can Participate in Digital Evangelism

Evangelism is not reserved for pastors, evangelists, or church leaders. Jesus commanded all believers to participate in making disciples. The digital age provides opportunities for every Christian to engage in outreach regardless of age, education, or location.

A simple testimony shared online may encourage someone who is struggling. A Bible verse posted at the right moment may bring hope to a person in despair. An invitation to church shared through social media may lead someone to Christ. Believers can use digital platforms to share testimonies, encourage others, invite people to church events, participate in online Bible studies, support Gospel-centred content, and communicate God’s love to those within their networks. When used wisely, these simple acts can have a significant impact on the Kingdom of God.

Application and Conclusion

As followers of Christ, we must intentionally view digital spaces as mission fields. Rather than merely consuming content, we should seek opportunities to influence others positively for Christ.

The digital age offers one of the greatest evangelistic opportunities in history. Jesus called His followers to be the light of the world. That calling extends beyond church buildings and physical communities into digital spaces where millions of people search daily for meaning, hope, and truth.
