REMAINING FOCUSED AMID OPPOSITION | REV DR JOHN KWASI FOSU

Amazing Grace Baptist Church, Hamburg Bible Study Material on Nehemiah 6:1-9

 Introduction

One of the greatest dangers in Christian service is becoming so focused on difficult people that we lose sight of the work God has given us. Opposition can consume our thoughts, steal our peace, and make us spend more time fighting people than serving God.

Nehemiah gives us a different example. He faced ridicule, threats, distraction, false accusations, and intimidation, but he continued building the wall. His enemies changed their methods, but Nehemiah remained focused on his mission. The lesson is simple: our mission must remain greater than our irritation.

Background

The rebuilding of Jerusalem’s wall was important for the people of God. Nehemiah was not doing a small or meaningless task. He had a God-given responsibility, and opposition came because the work was moving forward.

Sanballat and Tobiah first used ridicule. When that failed, they used threats. When threats failed, they tried distraction. Later came false accusations and intimidation. Nehemiah had to remain spiritually and emotionally alert. His answer was not to abandon the wall. He continued the work God had placed before him.

Main Content: Essentials of Remaining Focused amid Opposition

Nehemiah 6:3 gives us one of the strongest statements in the whole story: “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down.” Nehemiah understood that not every invitation deserved his attention.

There are times when difficult people will try to pull us away from our purpose. They may demand our attention, draw us into arguments, or keep bringing old problems back to mind. If we are not careful, we can spend all our energy dealing with conflict.

A church leader may begin with a burden for evangelism, discipleship, prayer, or helping people. But after repeated criticism, the leader may begin thinking about the critics all the time. The ministry continues outwardly, but emotionally the leader has “come down from the wall.” We need to ask ourselves, “What has God called me to build?” It may be our family, our ministry, our testimony, our church, or our responsibility to share the Gospel.

Another important lesson is that not every disagreement is an attack. Sometimes a person is genuinely concerned. Sometimes there is a misunderstanding. Sometimes we may be wrong. Before calling someone a difficult person, we should examine ourselves and ask, “Could I have misunderstood this person?”

We must also learn that boundaries are not rejection. Nehemiah was willing to say no. Christians should be loving, but we do not need to give every person unlimited access to our time, emotions, or attention. Healthy boundaries can protect relationships and ministry.

When pressure comes, Nehemiah shows us the right balance: pray and act. Prayer should not replace wisdom, and wisdom should not replace prayer. We can pray for someone while also having a necessary conversation. We can forgive someone while maintaining a wise boundary. We can love people without allowing them to control our emotions.

Application

When you face criticism or conflict, stop and ask: “Is this taking me away from what God has called me to do?” If the answer is yes, return your attention to your assignment.

Do not answer every criticism. Do not fight every battle. Do not allow one person’s behaviour to determine your peace. Pray before responding, seek wise counsel when necessary, and then continue the work.

Also examine your own heart. We should not only ask, “Why are they behaving like this?” We should ask, “Lord, how are You asking me to behave?”

Conclusion

Nehemiah completed the wall because he refused to allow opposition to become more important than his assignment. His enemies tried to bring him down from the wall, but he stayed focused.

The same principle applies to us. Do not abandon your ministry because someone criticised you. Do not lose your peace because someone misunderstood you. Do not allow a difficult person to turn you into a difficult Christian. Stay on the wall. Pray. Use wisdom. Respond with grace. Set healthy boundaries when needed. Then return to the work God has given you.
