BUILDING A UNITED CHURCH THROUGH THE BOND OF FELLOWSHIP | REV DR JOHN KWASI FOSU

Amazing Grace Baptist Church, Hamburg Bible Study Material on Acts 2:42-46

INTRODUCTION

The church is more than a building where people gather to worship God. It is a family of believers united through faith in Jesus Christ. Genuine Christian fellowship is essential for a healthy and growing church because it creates an environment where believers can know, care for, encourage, and grow with one another.

In a world where many people experience loneliness and isolation, the church should be a place where everyone feels accepted, valued, loved, and connected. Those who come to church should gradually move from being strangers to becoming part of a loving family.

THE EXAMPLE OF THE EARLY CHURCH

The early church in Acts provides a powerful example of Christian fellowship. Acts 2:42 tells us that the believers “continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Their fellowship went beyond worship services. They shared their lives, prayed, ate, worshipped, and supported one another. Christian fellowship means sharing life because of our common relationship with Christ. It involves caring, encouraging, praying, helping, and standing together in both good and difficult times.

FROM ATTENDING CHURCH TO BELONGING TO A CHURCH FAMILY

There is a difference between attending church and belonging to a church family. A person may attend every Sunday and still feel lonely or disconnected. True fellowship begins when people move beyond simply gathering in the same place and develop meaningful relationships.

The early believers had a strong sense of responsibility towards one another. When someone had a need, others were willing to help. This kind of fellowship is important for church growth because true growth involves not only numbers but also spiritual maturity, unity, love, discipleship, and strong relationships.

FELLOWSHIP AS A FOUNDATION FOR CHURCH GROWTH

A church may have many members, but without genuine love and care, it will struggle to experience healthy growth. The church must create a culture where people feel that they belong.

New members should be welcomed, visitors should be received warmly, the sick should be visited, the grieving should be comforted, and those who are struggling should be encouraged. A strong church is one where members know they are not alone but have people who will support them in difficult times and celebrate with them in times of joy.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GENUINE FELLOWSHIP

Fellowship requires intentional effort. Churches can create opportunities for deeper relationships through small groups, Bible studies, prayer meetings, home cells, family gatherings, and other ministries.

Such activities allow believers to talk, listen, pray, encourage, and serve one another. The goal is to create an environment where members do not merely know each other’s names but genuinely know and care about one another’s lives.

THE ENEMIES OF CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP

Several things can destroy fellowship in the church. Gossip destroys trust, while favouritism creates division. Pride prevents people from admitting their mistakes, and unforgiveness allows offences to become lasting conflicts. Cliques can make newcomers feel excluded, while competition can create unhealthy rivalry.

Every Christian therefore has a responsibility to protect the unity of the church. Ephesians 4:3 encourages believers to be “endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Unity requires patience, humility, forgiveness, good communication, and love.

EVERY MEMBER HAS A ROLE IN BUILDING FELLOWSHIP

A strong fellowship culture begins when members intentionally care for one another. We should encourage those who are discouraged, check on those who are absent, welcome newcomers, celebrate with those who rejoice, and comfort those who grieve.

Fellowship should not be left only to pastors and church leaders. Every believer has a responsibility to build meaningful relationships and strengthen the church community.

FELLOWSHIP AND THE GROWTH OF THE CHURCH

A strong bond of fellowship creates a healthy environment for church growth. People who feel loved and accepted are more likely to remain connected, grow spiritually, participate in ministry, and invite others to church.

The early church demonstrated this principle. The believers lived in unity, shared their lives, and cared for one another. As a result, Acts 2:47 tells us that “the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved”

The growth came from God, but the loving and united community of believers provided a powerful witness to the world.

CONCLUSION: BUILDING A CHURCH WHERE PEOPLE BELONG

The church must become more than a place where people gather. It must be a family where everyone feels valued, welcomed, and loved.

A growing church is not simply a church with more people. It is a church where people grow deeper in their relationship with God and with one another. Strong fellowship produces strong relationships, and strong relationships contribute to a healthy and growing church.
